Mohamed Salah Leads Liverpool Pre-Season After Missing Jota’s Funeral
Tragic Passing of Diogo Jota and Brother Sparks Mourning at Liverpool
In recent days, Liverpool stars have begun pre-season training amidst a somber mood following the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva. Jota, 28, was laid to rest in Portugal after they were killed in a car accident in northern Spain.
The car crash occurred early Thursday morning on the A-52 motorway, just weeks after Jota married his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso. He leaves behind two young sons, Dinis and Duarte, aged four and two, and an infant daughter, Mafalda. The news of his passing has shocked the football community worldwide.
Jota’s Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah expressed his grief, saying, “I am truly lost for words.” Salah, who played alongside Jota for five years, also revealed that he found it frightening to consider returning to training just days after the tragedy. “It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back,” Salah added. His thoughts are with Jota’s family during this difficult time.
Many players paid tribute during Jota’s funeral, including teammate Andy Robertson, who arrived to honor the player. Jota and his brother died when their Lamborghini, which was overtaking another vehicle, suffered a tyre blowout and burst into flames. They were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to Britain, following Diogo’s recovery from lung surgery, as flying was advised against.
Transport safety experts have suggested that excessive speed contributed to the crash. Javier Lopez Delgado, a road safety specialist, indicated that skid marks visible at the scene imply they were traveling at high velocity. He also cited road surface issues and improper barrier design as potential factors in the accident.
The police investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have yet to release details on the vehicle’s speed or the driver. The crash site has previously seen another severe accident, leading experts to suspect that multiple factors may have played a role in the tragic loss of the brothers.
