Why Arsenal Opted for Viktor Gyokeres Over Benjamin Sesko

Arsenal has made significant strides in their search for a new striker, with reports indicating they are close to signing Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. The 27-year-old Swede is expected to transfer from Lisbon to London in a deal potentially worth up to £70 million.

Discussions have focused on bonus structures within the fee, and Gyokeres has already agreed to a five-year contract. This move follows unsuccessful negotiations for Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, as Arsenal’s interest in the Slovenian striker appears to have cooled.

According to reports, Leipzig valued Sesko at around €80 million, demanding a substantial upfront payment of €40 million, which Arsenal deemed too expensive. The club’s management, led by Mikel Arteta, has now shifted their attention to Gyokeres after negotiations with Sesko reached an impasse.

Current transfer talks involve differing opinions on payment structures. Arsenal is proposing €65 million plus €15 million in potential add-ons, while Sporting’s president, Frederico Varandas, is demanding €70 million upfront.

Meanwhile, Arsenal has already confirmed their first major signing of the summer: midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old Spanish international signed a five-year deal after a competitive pursuit that included other top Premier League clubs.
