High School Graduates Achieve Nearly $11 Million in Scholarships

A group of nine talented graduates from Cardinal Spellman Catholic High School has made headlines by collectively earning close to $11 million in college scholarships, placing them firmly in the “Millionaire’s Club.” Each student received over $1 million in merit-based awards, many from prestigious institutions including Ivy League universities.

The students, who applied to an average of 16 universities each, secured a total scholarship sum of approximately $10,799,476. Among them, Robert Hernandez applied to 20 schools, aiming to pursue a career in musical theater, while others competed for scholarships from various external organizations, many offering awards as small as $1,000 but collectively contributing to the impressive total.

Rehema Ojwang, one of the recipients, emphasized that her success demonstrates that high achievement is achievable for anyone, even first-generation Americans like herself. “It shows that with passion, effort, and persistence, big goals are possible,” she said. Similarly, Shakira Simo plans to study public policy at Brown University, inspired by her academic journey.

Students also engaged in various extracurricular pursuits; Henriques designed her own prom dress, and Hernandez actively participated in his school’s theater program. Their commitment extended beyond academics as they navigated the college application process, even calling universities to negotiate additional scholarship funds.

Their accomplishments are celebrated by the school, which proudly showcased the record-breaking total on its social media channels. The graduates are poised to attend renowned institutions such as Princeton University, Marist College, SUNY Stony Brook, and Lehman College, marking a remarkable milestone in their academic journeys.
