Kamala Harris Slams Dem Governors for Questioning Biden: “Saving Our Democracy”
Controversy Surrounding Meeting of Democratic Governors over President Biden’s Cognitive Abilities
A recent book reports that during a July 2024 gathering, Vice President Kamala Harris urged Democratic governors to support Joe Biden, emphasizing that “this is about saving our democracy” despite concerns about his mental sharpness. Her candid language drew criticism and highlighted internal doubts within the party.
In a surprising move, New York Governor Kathy Hochul claimed that all Democratic governors pledged their loyalty to Biden, although this statement was later proven inaccurate. Hochul was joined by Governor Tim Walz and Governor Wes Moore, who at the time were seen as potential alternative candidates, but most attendees did not publicly endorse Biden’s continued presidency.
The meeting was convened amidst rising concern about Biden’s health, especially after a disappointing debate performance against Donald Trump on June 27, 2024, where he appeared to struggle and made nonsensical statements. Less than a month later, Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race.
Several governors, including Janet Mills of Maine and Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, openly expressed doubts about Biden’s ability to serve another term, with some warning that his candidacy could lead to losses in traditionally Democratic states. Hawaiian Governor Josh Green also raised questions about Biden’s health during the discussions.
Overall, the gathering underscored the Democratic Party’s internal divisions and concerns regarding the aging president’s capacity, amid broader debates over leadership and future electoral prospects.
