Lesley Stahl Criticizes CBS Leadership Amid Internal Turmoil
Veteran journalist Lesley Stahl has publicly voiced concerns over the turmoil at CBS, criticizing the network’s top executives, including President Shari Redstone. Her comments come in the wake of a significant lawsuit involving CBS and former President Donald Trump, and reveal internal tensions affecting morale and editorial independence.
In a recent interview, Stahl expressed her frustration with the direction the network is heading, particularly citing the departure of Chief Producer Bill Owens, which she called “painful” due to perceived censorship of editorial content. She also discussed the sudden resignation of CBS News President Wendy Milham, describing the current environment as “difficult” and noting increased corporate interference in journalistic decisions.
“It undermines the First Amendment and freedom of the press,” Stahl stated, emphasizing her concern about the influence of corporate interests over journalistic integrity. She questioned whether a news organization under such corporate pressure can truly serve the public interest.
Adding to the tension are the ongoing lawsuits from Donald Trump, who initially sued CBS for $10 billion over coverage of the 2020 election, and recently increased his demands to $20 billion. Stahl condemned such “frivolous” lawsuits, linking them to a broader decline in trust toward media institutions and skepticism among the public.
“Even the Founding Fathers recognized the importance of a strong press to hold officials accountable,” she remarked, lamenting the public’s waning support for journalism.
Reflecting on recent leadership changes, Stahl described Owens’ departure as “very painful” and expressed her disappointment over what she perceives as a betrayal by corporate leadership. When asked if she feels angry at Redstone’s management, she admitted, “Yes, I think I am.”
Concluding with her outlook on the future of journalism, Stahl revealed her pessimism, citing a loss of public trust and a decline in the strength of the press during these turbulent times. “We’re in very dark times,” she said.
