Luxury Fruit on Sale at Upper West Side Market – Only $130!

Japan’s Premium Crown Melons Available at a Discount in New York

Known as the “king of fruits,” Japanese crown melons are highly prized for their exceptional sweetness, subtle flavor, and silky texture. At a local Asian supermarket, HMart’s Upper West Side location, these exclusive melons are on sale for $130 each, down from the regular $180, but supplies are limited with only four left in stock.

The melons originate from the Shizuoka region in western Japan and are presented in elegant black boxes with gold lettering, displayed securely in lucite within the store. Each melon features a distinctive T-shaped stem, indicating that it was cultivated using the “one tree, one fruit” method—allowing all nutrients to be concentrated into a single, premium piece.

Growing these melons demands meticulous care, including precise control of temperature, humidity, and water. Before they earn the crown seal, each melon undergoes strict evaluation for flavor, sugar content, appearance, and ripeness. Typically weighing around 3.3 pounds, they are larger than a bocce ball but smaller than a bowling ball.

Consumers can find these luxury fruits at other stores too, such as Butterfield Market, which stocks them seasonally. The melons are also served at high-end restaurants, including Jōji NY, a sushi venue in One Vanderbilt.

Rich in potassium and vitamins A and C, these melons ripen after harvest and should be stored at room temperature until ready to eat. For optimal taste, refrigerate the melon for 2 to 3 hours before consumption.

Market manager Ken Williams reports selling about 36 melons weekly when they are available. While the price may seem steep, some buyers consider them a perfect, indulgent gift. Alternatively, they can be ordered online through specialty sites like Ikigai Fruits at $177 with delivery or Melissa’s Produce at $159 pre-order, excluding shipping costs.
