Wo:me:n Impaled by Metal Spike While Mowing Lawn
Woman Keeps Two-Foot Spike as Souvenir After Lawn Mower Incident
Kaylee Malone, 31, experienced a shocking accident while mowing her lawn, resulting in a two-foot metal spike impaling her leg. She has decided to keep the spike as a personal memento of the incident.
While tending to her yard with her nine-month-old son on her back, Kaylee heard an unusual noise from the mower. Upon inspecting her surroundings, she noticed a large metal spike embedded in her calf, which she couldn’t initially feel.
Despite the pain, she managed to walk approximately 150 feet across her yard with her son still strapped on her back to call emergency services. Paramedics arrived promptly, and she was rushed to the hospital, where she underwent an hour and a half surgery to remove the spike.
Fortunately, the spike missed her bones, though she sustained nerve damage. She was able to leave the hospital the same day. Later, Kaylee returned to retrieve the spike and now displays it in her garage as a keepsake.
To offset medical expenses, she is also selling T-shirts featuring her X-ray image of the injury. Kaylee explained: “When I went to pick up the spike, the medical staff was stunned, wondering how I wasn’t more hurt.”
She described the event: “I was just mowing and the mower suddenly made a loud noise, then shut off. I looked around and saw the spike in my leg. I cursed, but I was careful not to scare my son.”
Her quick thinking and resilience helped her avoid more severe injuries. After the surgery, she was given a tetanus shot and antibiotics and reported her leg is healing well. Doctors said the muscles and tissues are repairing, though healing time may vary.
