Tr:um:p Talks with Putin as Pentagon Halts Ukraine Missile Shipments
President Trump Holds Call with Putin Amid Ongoing Ukraine Conflict
President Donald Trump recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledging that the discussion did not result in any progress towards ending the war in Ukraine. Trump described the call as lengthy, covering topics including Iran and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“We talked about a lot of things, including Iran, and the war with Ukraine. I am not happy about it,” Trump stated. “I didn’t make any progress with him today at all.”
The call lasted nearly an hour. According to the Kremlin, the leaders had a candid and constructive discussion about Ukraine, along with other issues like Syria’s political situation and Iran’s nuclear program after recent US airstrikes.
Putin emphasized Russia’s desire for a negotiated solution, expressing willingness to pursue talks. Meanwhile, Trump reiterated his stance on ending hostilities as soon as possible, though Russia’s position remains firm on addressing what Moscow considers the root causes of the conflict, including Ukraine’s pro-Western government.
Recent negotiations between Trump and Putin have also involved efforts to facilitate a diplomatic end to the Ukraine war, often complicated by Kyiv’s refusal to recognize Russia’s territorial gains or consider NATO membership, which Russia strongly opposes.
Additionally, the Biden administration has halted some weapons shipments to Ukraine, citing depleted US stockpiles. Zelensky expressed hope of speaking with Trump soon to discuss the status of military aid.
The Moscow readout did not mention the weapons shipment halt during the call. Zelensky, after meeting with European Union supporters, indicated he hoped to speak with Trump shortly about military aid. Meanwhile, the US’s recent actions included brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, following military strikes in Iran.
Trump has expressed pessimism about resolving the Ukraine conflict, likening the fighting to two children refusing to stop, suggesting that sometimes it’s better to let them fight for a while before intervening.
