Stunning Aerial Photos Capture Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Over NYC
On July 4th, a dedicated pilot and photographer gained exclusive access to the skies above Manhattan, capturing breathtaking images of the iconic fireworks display from an altitude of approximately 7,500 to 8,000 feet. These remarkable shots provide a unique perspective of the spectacle as 80,000 shells exploded over the East River from four barges, with the city skyline serving as a vivid backdrop.
The photographer, Filip Wolak, who has over 15 years of experience in aerial photography, took these images from within the controlled airspace limit of 7,000 feet, safely above the fireworks scene. “What made this special was I was the only person out there. I had the best seat,” Wolak explained. His photos vividly showcase the glowing, colorful pyrotechnics radiating from the river, surrounding the urban landscape.
While photographing fireworks from a moving aircraft is complex and stressful, Wolak emphasized the importance of teamwork, with a co-pilot monitoring traffic and altitude. To optimize image quality, he slows the plane to minimal flying speed, ensuring clear, sharp shots despite the challenging conditions.
Despite concerns that airspace closures due to a presidential visit might prevent his participation, Wolak managed to capture the stunning display. Reflecting on the experience, he noted, “I thought I might not make it because the airspace was shut down last night for the president’s visit, but I was able to get these incredible shots.”
