Liverpool Star Diogo Jota Laid to Rest in Portugal Amid Wife’s Heartbroken Grief
Funeral of Diogo Jota and His Brother Andre Silva
During the funeral service, Rute Cardoso, dressed in white, helped carry the coffin of her late husband, Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota, alongside their children. Her unwavering gaze remained fixed on the casket, her tears evident as she supported it across the church courtyard. Her grief was palpable, supported by loved ones and fellow mourners.
Two weeks prior, Rute and Diogo, both 28, celebrated their wedding surrounded by family and friends—a poignant contrast to the sorrow of the current day. Diogo expressed his happiness, feeling “supremely lucky” on that joyful occasion.
The service in Gondomar, near Porto, was marked by heartfelt moments, including the playing of Schubert’s Ave Maria—familiar from Jota’s wedding day. Family, friends, and international footballers gathered inside the 17th-century church to pay their respects. The bishop addressed the congregation, emphasizing the pain felt by Jota’s children and grandparents, especially highlighting the torment of losing young lives.
Jota’s parents, Joaquim and Isabel Silva, mourned their sons shortly after their wedding. Mourning extended beyond family; fellow players like Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson, and others from Liverpool arrived to offer condolences, some visibly emotional as they carried wreaths and paid tribute.
Jota and his brother Andre Silva, 25, tragically died in a fiery car crash on a Spanish highway while en route from Porto to Santander. Their bodies were laid to rest in a cemetery lined with olive trees, with family, club mates, and fans attending the farewell. Portuguese football stars, including Ruben Neves and Nelson Semedo, also paid their respects.
The ceremony ended with a moving performance of Ave Maria, sung by wedding singer Alexandra Quinta e Costa, who had performed at the couple’s wedding just days earlier. Throughout the service, mourners expressed their grief through floral tributes, scarves, flags, and heartfelt messages.
Portugal’s national team manager Roberto Martinez expressed his deep sadness, affirming the unity of the nation during this difficult time: “We are always with Diogo and Andre. Always, always with us.”
