Kentucky Doctor Marites Buenafe Vanishes After Solo Alaska Hike
Missing Passenger on Alaska Cruise Sparks Search Efforts
A doctor from Kentucky disappeared after disembarking from a Norwegian cruise ship to hike alone in Alaska, prompting a comprehensive search operation.
Marites Buenafe, 62, was last seen leaving a tramway station during her solo hike near Juneau on July 1. She had informed her family earlier that morning via text that she was heading to Gold Ridge and Gastineau Peak. Security footage confirmed she left the tramway’s top station around the same time.
Authorities have launched an extensive search using helicopters, drone technology, and search dogs in the mountainous areas south of downtown Juneau, but so far, there have been no signs of her. The ship, which departed from Seattle and was on a week-long voyage, remains in the region as efforts continue. It is scheduled to return to Seattle this Saturday.
Buenafe, a primary care physician with over two decades of experience, currently practices at Albert B. Chandler Hospital at the University of Kentucky HealthCare in Lexington. Her family and colleagues are deeply concerned, and the cruise line has expressed support, assisting local authorities and providing counseling and aid to her loved ones.
While there is hope for her safe return, authorities remain vigilant, continuing their efforts to locate her. The mystery surrounding her disappearance has left her family, friends, and the local community anxiously awaiting updates.
