Bernardo Silva Honors Diogo Jota at Funeral: “He’ll Always Be in Our Hearts”
Tributes for Diogo Jota Following Tragic Passing
Manchester City star Bernardo Silva expressed deep admiration for his close friend and Portuguese teammate Diogo Jota during his funeral ceremony. Jota and his brother Andre tragically died early Thursday morning after a car accident in Spain.
Silva remembered Jota’s unwavering passion and determination that propelled him to a successful career, including his role in Liverpool’s Premier League title victory last season. Describing Jota as a great friend, Silva reflected on the significance of his personality beyond football. “He was someone who took the most difficult paths, never trained with the biggest clubs, but his perseverance and dedication led him to success,” Silva said.
Jota’s contribution to Portugal’s national team was also highlighted, having played 37 matches alongside Silva. The players shared a strong bond, often facing each other in club matches between Manchester City and Liverpool. Silva added, “He will always be in our hearts, part of every meal and team gathering — he’ll forever be with us.”
Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez paid his respects, calling the loss “very, very sad” and expressing solidarity with Jota’s family. He remarked that their recent Nations League victory made the tragedy even more poignant. “We are all with his family and friends — always,” Martinez stated.
Jota was traveling to Santander to catch a ferry back to England for pre-season when the accident occurred. He was advised not to fly due to recent lung surgery. The crash happened when their Lamborghini left the road, rolled over, and caught fire near Zamora around 12:35 a.m. Unfortunately, both brothers could not be saved at the scene.
