Alisson Opens Up About Missing Jota’s Funeral After Tragic Liverpool Loss

Alisson Explains Absence from Diogo Jota’s Funeral and Shares Emotional Tribute

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker addressed why he was unable to attend the funeral of teammate Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident along with his brother, Andre Silva, earlier this week in Spain.

In an emotional post on Instagram, Alisson, who has been Jota’s teammate since 2020, expressed his sorrow and connection despite being separated by an ocean. He shared a heartfelt message saying, “Usually, I post things that make sense, but today, nothing makes sense! Once again, an ocean separates me from ‘saying goodbye’ to someone I love! But I know I am well represented by my club mates!” He included a black-and-white photo showing himself, his wife Natalia, Jota, Jota’s partner Rute, and their children.

Alisson extended his condolences to Jota’s partner, Rute, emphasizing that they would support her during this difficult time: “Just know that you will never walk alone, we will be with you as soon as possible!” He described Jota as a “great friend, father, and husband,” and reflected on the tragedy, stating, “In moments like this, we bow before the Sovereignty of God and accept His grace and help.”

He concluded his tribute by quoting Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, which speaks of there being a time for everything—including mourning and celebration, tears and laughter.

Tributes from Teammates and Others

While Alisson couldn’t attend the funeral in person, many of Jota’s friends and teammates from Liverpool were present in Gondomar, Portugal. Notable attendees included Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Joe Gomez, who paid their respects by entering the church with floral tributes.

Portuguese internationals such as Bruno Fernandes, Joao Moutinho, and Ruben Neves also joined the memorial service. Jota, aged 28, had scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool and was part of the team that won the Premier League last season. His brother was only 25 years old at the time of their passing.
