Zohran Mamdani Checks Asian & Bl:a:ck on Columbia Application

NYC Mayoral Front-Runner Zohran Mamdani’s Racial Identity Under Question

Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate for New York City mayor and a democratic socialist, was recently revealed to have checked multiple racial boxes on his Columbia University application in 2009 when he was a high school senior. He marked both “Asian” and “Black or African American,” despite being born in Uganda, a detail he explained as his attempt to reflect the complexity of his background, as there was no specific option for Indian-Ugandans.

Mamdani, now a 33-year-old Queens lawmaker, stated he does not personally identify strictly with any race but considers himself “an American born in Africa.” He clarified that the racial boxes were chosen due to application limitations, not for strategic advantages in admissions. His campaign emphasized that Columbia’s past practice of considering race in admissions is now outdated following recent Supreme Court rulings.

The revelation comes amid a cyber breach where over 2.5 million Columbia applications were stolen, some believed to be targeted to investigate the university’s affirmative action policies. Columbia maintains compliance with legal standards concerning race-conscious admissions.

Critics, including political opponents and community members, have accused Mamdani of exploiting race categories for college entry. A prominent conservative leader called Mamdani’s actions a “fraud,” stating that race should be a scientific classification, not a checkbox based on nationality. Others argued that Mamdani’s assertions about his background are a form of pretense, highlighting his privileged upbringing by wealthy parents, including Columbia professor Mahmood Mamdani and Oscar-nominee Mira Nair.

Adams’ campaign questioned Mamdani’s honesty regarding his racial identity, suggesting he misrepresented his background to gain admission to Columbia. The issue has sparked broader debate about racial identity, privilege, and the use of affirmative action.

Current Campaign and Polls

Despite the controversy, Mamdani is leading in the polls with 35% support for the upcoming election, closely followed by Cuomo at 29%. Supporters praise his platform of progressive policies, including taxing the wealthy to fund public services, while critics remain skeptical of his background and political stance. The election features incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is seeking re-election.
