NYPD Seeks Federal Clearance to Take Down Dangerous Drones

NYPD Seeks Authority to Intercept Dangerous Drones Over New York City

The New York Police Department is calling for federal approval to disable or shoot down “hazardous” drones flying over the city, particularly during large public events. Currently, the department is restricted from taking direct action against drones and depends on federal agencies to handle such threats.

During a security briefing on the Fourth of July, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized the increasing danger posed by weaponized drones, citing examples from conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, and US borders. She explained that, despite the rising number of drone incidents, the NYPD lacks the authority to neutralize these devices independently.

Tisch advocates for federal approval
Tisch highlighted the need for federal support to empower local law enforcement in drone mitigation.

“We depend on federal partners to intercept threats, but we need the tools to act ourselves,” Tisch stated. She urged Congress to pass legislation granting NYPD the power to handle drones directly. Meanwhile, some officials believe executive orders from the White House could soon provide local departments with necessary permissions, with updates expected from recent federal directives.

Currently, law enforcement can disable drones via signal jamming, net guns, or in extreme cases, firing upon them. However, without explicit authority, these options are off-limits for local agencies.

Potential executive order for drone authority
An upcoming federal executive order might authorize local agencies to combat drone threats.

An executive order issued last month by the White House establishes a task force to review regulations and improve drone threat management, though it stops short of granting local enforcement direct override powers. The FAA has yet to comment on the matter.

Until legislative changes are made, NYPD relies on technology such as portable interception stations and collaboration with agencies like the FBI to monitor and mitigate drone threats during major events, including Independence Day celebrations. Authorities have assured the public there are no credible threats for the holiday, with heavy police presence and citywide security measures in place.

“Because of global tensions and domestic threats from lone actors,” Tisch added, “we continue to monitor and prepare for evolving challenges related to drone incidents.”

While unable to intervene directly, the NYPD employs drones for surveillance at protests and large gatherings, maintaining a watchful eye on the skies during critical moments.
