Diogo Jota’s Last Photo: Celebrating with Wife & Friends Before Tragic Passing
Final Photo of Diogo Jota Shared Before Tragic Death
The last known image of Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota before his untimely passing at age 28 has been revealed. Jota died on Thursday alongside his brother when their Lamborghini lost control and caught fire after a tyre blew out while overtaking in Spain’s Zamora province, near the Portugal border.
The car reportedly rolled over and burned, with emergency responders unable to rescue the passengers. Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, 26, who played for Portuguese side Penafiel, also perished in the crash.
At the time of the accident, Jota and Silva were traveling to Santander to catch a ferry to Britain. Due to post-surgery advice not to fly, Jota preferred to travel by sea. He was heading to Liverpool for pre-season training after celebrating his wedding just days earlier with his wife, Rute, in Porto.
The Lamborghini crash occurred on the A-52, a significant route connecting northern Portugal with Spanish ports and France. Officials confirmed two fatalities early Thursday morning, with wreckage indicating the brothers’ destination was the UK.
In the final photo, Jota was dressed in a blue suit, white shirt, purple tie, dark sunglasses, and a wide smile, surrounded by nine friends including his wife Rute. She shared photos of their wedding day, calling it her “dream come true,” with Jota replying: “I’m the lucky one.” Jota, a father of three, had recently married his childhood sweetheart.
Tributes pour in from fans and teammates
Cristiano Ronaldo, a close friend and Portugal teammate, expressed his shock and condolences, emphasizing Jota’s recent happiness with his family. Liverpool players Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz also mourned Jota, along with former manager Jurgen Klopp.
The sports star was known for his impressive Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder, capable of exceeding 200 mph, which reportedly was the vehicle involved in the crash. Authorities are investigating whether a tyre blowout caused the fatal accident.
Jota’s brief but impactful career included winning the Premier League with Liverpool in 2024/25 and helping Portugal secure the Nations League title last month.
