Diogo Jota and Brother Mourned by Fans at Funeral in Portugal

Tragic Loss of Footballer Diogo Jota and Brother in Car Crash

The funeral preparations are underway for footballer Diogo Jota and his brother, following their tragic deaths in a car accident. Their coffins were warmly received by mourners outside a church in Portugal, where supporters expressed their grief with tears and applause.

Jota, 28, and his brother André, 26, died early Thursday in a fiery crash on the A-52 highway near Zamora, Spain. The accident occurred around 12:35 a.m. when Jota’s Lamborghini Huracan reportedly suffered a tire blowout while overtaking another vehicle. The supercar veered off the road, rolled over, and burst into flames, igniting nearby vegetation. Emergency services arrived but could not save them. Authorities confirmed both brothers died at the scene.

The brothers’ bodies were transported to a funeral home in Puebla de Sanabria before being returned to Portugal. The wake is scheduled for 8 a.m. at Capela de Ressurreicao in Gondomar, with the funeral service set for Saturday at the Igreja Matriz. The local priest expressed readiness to honor their lives and share in the community’s grief.

Jota recently married his childhood sweetheart, Rute, and the couple have three children—a daughter born in November and two sons. In his final social media post, Jota shared wedding photos, expressing happiness with the caption “My dream come true.” Rute also posted wedding pictures, calling it her “dream fulfilled.”

Professionally, Jota played a key role in Liverpool’s triumph in the 2024/25 Premier League season, scoring six goals in 26 appearances. He also represented Portugal, helping the national team win the Nations League last month.

The Portuguese Football Federation and the Spanish authorities expressed their condolences. The federation described Jota as not only a talented player but also a respected and joyful individual. They announced plans to honor his memory with a minute’s silence before Portugal’s upcoming match. Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, his former clubs, also mourn his loss.
