Chelsea to Let Pedro Neto Decide on Playing After Friend Diogo Jota’s Passing
Chelsea to Support Pedro Neto’s Decision Amid Personal Tragedy
Chelsea has decided to leave the choice of whether Pedro Neto will play in their upcoming Club World Cup match against Palmeiras in the hands of the player himself. This decision comes shortly after Neto experienced the loss of his close friend and former teammate, Diogo Jota.
Neto was absent from training on Thursday morning in Miami after receiving the tragic news. He previously played alongside Jota at Wolverhampton Wanderers and for the Portugal national team.
The club is offering Neto compassionate leave, and it remains uncertain if he will participate in the quarter-final fixture. Chelsea’s coach, Enzo Maresca, emphasized that Neto’s decision is entirely his own. In a recent press conference, he said:
“It is completely Pedro’s decision. I spoke with him this morning, and whatever he chooses is the right one. We will support him regardless of whether he plays or not. Today is a very sad day; words are hard to find. Our thoughts are with his family.”
Images show Jota on his wedding day not long ago, and Neto, a close friend of Jota, has been offered support from the club during this difficult time.
Additionally, Chelsea’s squad is facing other challenges. Romeo Lavia missed training due to a muscular issue, and midfield options are limited, especially with Moises Caicedo suspended for the match. Joao Pedro, who recently joined from Brighton, may make his debut, though coach Maresca indicated he might need more training time to be ready.
