Championship Club Banned from Transfers Until 2027 Over £1m Debt to Premier League
Championship Club Faces Transfer Ban Until 2027 Due to Late Debt Payment
The club has confirmed that it has been issued with a significant transfer embargo, preventing them from signing new players during the next three transfer windows. The club plans to appeal the decision, which they believe can be resolved swiftly.
Announcing on social media, the club stated: “We can confirm that we have received notification from the EFL of a transfer embargo and a three-window fee restriction with immediate effect. We will appeal the fee restriction and are confident of resolving the matter promptly.”
The restriction is reportedly linked to financial concerns, specifically a late payment of £1 million owed to a Premier League team as part of a loan deal for Louie Barry in January. Barry, who joined midseason, suffered a season-ending injury shortly after, and the club narrowly avoided relegation on the final day.
The punishment could have long-term effects on their transfer plans and squad stability. Despite recent losses exceeding £60 million, club owner Acun Ilicali reassured supporters that there are no financial issues. He claimed, “We don’t owe any money to anyone—the club owes money to me, and I am funding everything,” adding that the team remains strong and stable.
The situation underscores ongoing concerns about the club’s financial health, even as officials work to address the embargo and reassure fans of their stability.
