Rangers Confidential: Ibrox Board’s Leeds Links Won’t Bring Cozy Chats with Rival Managers
Rangers and Leeds United Strengthen Ties with Manchester City Investment
The recent involvement of 49ers Enterprises at both clubs ensures a close partnership between Rangers and Leeds United for the foreseeable future. However, this alliance is unlikely to influence the rivalry between their managers.
Leeds’ manager Daniel Farke, who previously ended Russell Martin’s playing career at Norwich City, may not be forgiven easily by Martin, despite their mutual interests. Martin, a club legend at Norwich, played there over 300 times and helped to achieve two promotions, earning the nickname ‘Norfolk Cafu’ for his attacking performances from the back.
He captained Norwich during their second rise to the Premier League and expressed a strong desire to manage the club someday. The arrival of Farke in 2017, however, marked a turning point. Their relationship was strained, especially after Martin suffered a back injury that sidelined him for weeks. Farke favored other players, and Martin was eventually loaned to Rangers in 2018, a spell that proved frustrating as Rangers struggled under Graeme Murty.
Reflecting on his Norwich exit, Martin revealed that he intended to conclude his playing career there and transition to coaching, but Farke’s plans diverged. He expressed ongoing resentment about Farke’s job security, even after Norwich defeated his current team in the 2024 play-off final.
Meanwhile, new Rangers assistant coach Matt Gill credits Celtic legend Paul Lambert for giving him his first significant managerial role, after convincing him to switch from Norwich to Ipswich Town. Gill, who also worked with Martin at Norwich, was previously involved with Tranmere Rovers before returning to coaching at Norwich.
Robbie Ure, a former Rangers youth player now playing in Sweden for Sirius, has been making an impact with his goal scoring. His recent streak includes three goals in three games, showcasing his potential to reach the international stage, similar to other Scottish players gaining experience abroad. Ure has expressed confidence that playing overseas can significantly develop talent and improve prospects for a future Scotland call-up.
Rangers Women to Play More Matches at Ibrox Stadium
The club announced that Ibrox will become the primary venue for Rangers Women’s matches, offering fans and players more opportunities to see their team at the iconic ground. Previously, home games were mainly held at Broadwood, with select fixtures at Ibrox.
Despite logistical challenges—such as scheduling conflicts, pitch conditions, and crowd numbers—the club sees this as a significant step toward elevating women’s football. The move aims to attract top talent and foster player development, representing a major milestone for Rangers’ women’s program.
However, maintaining this arrangement involves potential complications, especially during busy periods like European competitions. While some English clubs share stadia with their women’s teams, others like Brighton are planning to build dedicated venues, emphasizing the importance of tailored facilities for women’s football.
Rangers’ ownership is committed to expanding support for their women’s team, with aspirations that, in time, a dedicated stadium might be the ideal solution for sustained growth and success.
