NATO Chief Warns US Must Continue Ukraine Weapon Support
UK and NATO Leaders Urge U.S. to Continue Supporting Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has publicly appealed to the U.S. government to reconsider its recent decision to stop supplying crucial weapons to Ukraine. During an interview, Rutte emphasized the importance of international support for Ukraine, especially in terms of ammunition and air defense systems, highlighting that these are vital for Ukraine’s defense efforts in the ongoing conflict.
Recent announcements confirmed that the U.S. would no longer send certain military supplies, including artillery rounds and missile systems, due to depleted stockpiles. Rutte pointed out that while Europe is increasing its backing for Ukraine, sustained practical support from the U.S. remains essential. He noted that a stable, secure Europe benefits U.S. interests as well, warning that prolonged conflict could lead to a larger Russian presence on the continent.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister, Mariana Betsa, stressed that delays in military support could encourage Russia to continue its aggressive actions rather than pursue peace. Russian forces have been advancing in eastern Ukraine, particularly near Pokrovsk, aiming to consolidate control over the Donbas region amidst ongoing battles and increased shelling on civilian areas.
President Trump has been involved in diplomatic efforts to broker a cease-fire, although progress remains elusive due to Russia’s continued resistance. During a NATO summit, Trump indicated he would explore supplying Patriot missile defenses to Ukraine, aiming to bolster its defenses amid the conflict.
Rutte warned that U.S. support is crucial, noting that an unstable Ukraine could threaten European and U.S. security. He also recalled an incident involving President Trump and the Israel-Iran ceasefire talks, highlighting the volatile nature of diplomacy during conflicts and Trump’s outspoken approach.
