Idaho Families Fight Kohberger Plea Deal
Family Members of Idaho Murder Victims Protest Plea Deal for Suspect
The families of the four University of Idaho students murdered in November 2022 are strongly opposed to the plea agreement accepted by Bryan Kohberger, which will result in a life sentence but avoid the death penalty. They express frustration and disappointment with the legal process, describing it as a failure to deliver justice.
Kaylee Goncalves’ father, Steve Goncalves, stated that the family had explicitly expressed their opposition to any plea deal, calling it a “HARD NO.” Despite this, prosecutors proceeded to offer Kohberger a deal, which the families believe dishonors the victims’ memory and disregards their desire for a trial. The Goncalves and Kernodle families intend to challenge the court’s approval at a scheduled hearing.
According to family members, prosecutors indicated that there was sufficient evidence to convict Kohberger should the case go to trial. Xana Kernodle’s aunt, Kim Kernodle, criticized the decision, asserting that it was an attempt to spare the victims’ families from reliving the horror of the crime rather than from seeking true justice. She emphasized that both families wanted Kohberger to face trial and be held accountable for his actions.
Images showing the victims at the crime scene and at their last moments underscore the tragedy and the families’ grief. Kaylee Goncalves’ sister, Aubrie, expressed outrage over the timing of the plea deal, calling it “shocking and cruel” to introduce it just weeks before the trial date. She condemned the system for failing the victims.
While most families oppose the plea agreement, Ethan Chapin’s mother, Stacy Chapin, expressed her support for the deal, stating that her family will attend the upcoming court hearing to back the plea bargain.
As the families prepare for the hearing, they continue to demand a process that respects their wishes for justice. Steve Goncalves questioned the justice system’s approach, asking, “How can you say it’s just when you haven’t even talked to us to see what justice looks like for us?”
