Exclusive: Teacher Christina Formella Pleads to Move Near Student Amid 50 Allegations
Accused Teacher Christina Formella Pleads for Court-Relocation Near Alleged Victim
Christina Formella, a 30-year-old former special education teacher and soccer coach, appeared in court seeking to lower the court-mandated distance buffer zone between her and her alleged teenage victim. She requested that the zone be reduced from 5,000 to 2,500 feet, citing the boy’s frequent activities nearby and his part-time job in the area. The judge denied this motion.
Formella was accompanied by her husband, Michael, and appeared confident, smiling and holding hands as they entered the courthouse. Her marital home is within the current buffer zone. Investigators allege her inappropriate relationship with the teen began when he was 14, starting with romantic and sexual advances that escalated over time. She is accused of over 50 instances of abuse, including dozens of sexual encounters both at her school and home, often during school hours.
The allegations came to light in March after the teen’s mother discovered disturbing text messages from Formella, expressing romantic feelings and openly discussing their sexual relationship. Prosecutors assert that Formella’s behavior was obsessive and controlling, with evidence indicating the pair had numerous sexual encounters at her and her husband’s residence, including during trips abroad.
During police interviews, Formella claimed she was being blackmailed by the boy and accused him of targeting her because she was attractive. However, investigators found diaries and messages depicting a different story, including detailed confessions of obsession and control. In her diary, she wrote about repeatedly trying to break up with the boy before her marriage, and expressed a belief that they would remain in each other’s lives forever, despite her protests that the writings were just self-therapy related to her marriage.
Investigators also revealed that the misconduct allegedly occurred during classroom sessions, with the first sexual contact allegedly happening when she was 28 and the boy 15. Prosecutors state she pursued him from a young age, grooming him through private tutoring after sports injury sidelined him from her team.
Previously, Formella faced additional charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and sexual assault. Her family’s lawyer, along with her father-in-law, has declined to comment publicly on her case.
