Diogo Jota Was ‘Driving to Get Ferry’ During Lamborghini Crash, Avoided Flying After Surgery
Liverpool’s Diogo Jota and His Brother Die in Car Crash in Spain
Diogo Jota, the Liverpool football star, and his younger brother Andre lost their lives when their Lamborghini crashed on a highway in northern Spain early Thursday morning. The accident occurred on the A-52 near Cernadilla, Zamora, after a tyre reportedly blew out while overtaking a vehicle. The supercar, a luxury Urus SUV estimated at £150,000, caught fire following the crash.
The brothers were en route to Santander to catch a ferry to the UK, where Jota was scheduled to begin pre-season training with Liverpool. His recent lung surgery had advised him against flying, prompting the decision to travel by sea. Jota had just celebrated his wedding to childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso two weeks prior, documenting their special day on social media, calling it “a day we will never forget.”
Rescue teams confirmed the fatalities at the scene. The vehicle went off the road, rolled over, and burst into flames, igniting nearby vegetation. Police have yet to determine who was driving at the time of the accident. The tragedy has deeply affected the football community, with tributes pouring in from fans, teammates, and clubs worldwide.
Jota, a key player in Liverpool’s recent Premier League victory, was also part of Portugal’s national team that won the Nations League last month. His brother Andre played for lower-division Portuguese club Penafiel.
Official statements expressed profound sadness. Liverpool FC described the loss as “unimaginable,” and Portugal’s football federation called the incident a devastating tragedy. Cristiano Ronaldo, a close friend and teammate, shared heartfelt condolences, highlighting Jota’s joyful personality and respect among peers.
The football world continues to mourn, with numerous clubs and former colleagues paying tribute. Liverpool fans gathered outside Anfield, laying flowers and holding memorials for the young athlete and his brother. The outpouring of grief underscores the profound impact of this tragedy on the entire sporting community.
Diogo Jota’s brother Andre, 26, was also a footballer and died in the crash during their road trip through Spain.
