Dems Drag Overdosed Rep After Dozing Off During Jeffries’ Speech
Nightlong Efforts to Pass Major Legislation
The House of Representatives endured an exhausting overnight session to push through a significant legislative package. During the debate, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries launched a lengthy speech, aiming to delay the bill’s passage. Notably, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, seated behind Jeffries, appeared visibly fatigued, nodding off multiple times amid the long night.
The effort to stall involved Jeffries utilizing the House’s “magic minute”—a privilege allowing party leaders to speak without time limit. He recounted constituents’ concerns about potential reforms to Medicaid and SNAP programs, as well as criticizing the GOP’s stance on the bill, all to extend the debate and delay voting. With most Republican members having departed the chamber, Democrats kept watch, showcasing their presence in favor of a delay strategy.
The GOP leadership faced a delicate challenge, working to rally enough of their slim majority to pass the bill before the Fourth of July deadline. In response, some members took brief naps in their offices, while others stayed alert through the marathon session. Right after 3 a.m., Republicans managed to overcome a procedural stalemate after four dissenters agreed to proceed.
The legislation, nicknamed the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” was heavily scrutinized and debated across committees for weeks, with lawmakers working through the night earlier in the process as well. The Republicans aimed to get the bill signed into law before the holiday, intensifying pressure on their colleagues to approve the measure despite internal disagreements.
