Tr:um:p Praises Mayor Adams’ Re-election, Threatens Zohran Mamdani Over ICE Interference
Trump Praises NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Threatens Political Opponents
During a visit to a migrant detention facility in Florida, former President Donald Trump expressed support for NYC Mayor Eric Adams, calling him a “very good person.” Trump also claimed he helped Adams by influencing the Department of Justice to dismiss Adams’ federal corruption charges, which both the mayor and Trump view as politically motivated due to his stance on immigration policies.
Trump warned that Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani could face arrest if he interferes with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), describing Mamdani as a “total nut job” and suggesting that he might be jailed for opposing immigration enforcement efforts. Trump further claimed that Mamdani’s progressive platform aims to oppose Trump’s policies, stating he would fight to prevent Mamdani from interfering with immigration crackdowns.
Adams, who is running as an independent, remains a controversial figure within the Democratic Party, partly due to his apparent closeness with Trump, which critics say undermines his standing. He’s competing against candidates including Mamdani, Republican Curtis Sliwa, and independent Jim Walden. Despite speculation, Cuomo has not decided about his potential independent bid, but his name will appear on the ballot.
Mamdani responded strongly to Trump’s threats, emphasizing his opposition to ICE and affirming his dedication to protecting immigrant communities. He criticized Trump for including praise for Adams amidst threats of authoritarian actions, calling it a sign of the urgency to end Adams’ tenure as mayor.
Adams has sought Trump’s support, which has been welcomed within his campaign, though he avoided directly asking for it. Support from the Trump family reportedly remains strong. His campaign spokesperson highlighted that public safety is non-partisan and aligns with Trump’s views.
