Teenager Survives Lightning Strike Through Electrical Outlet
An Alabama teen was struck by lightning through an electrical outlet while using her phone during a thunderstorm, resulting in temporary memory loss and tingling sensations.
Lisa Henderson, 19, was lying in bed in her Russellville home, browsing social media, when a bright flash was followed by an electric shock. She recounted hearing a loud pop and experiencing ringing in her ears afterward.
She also felt tingling in her hands extending to her right arm and shoulder. It was later determined that lightning traveled through an extension cord and her phone charger, which she was holding when struck.
Henderson managed to throw her phone away, realizing that holding onto it could have caused further electrocution. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance, where she struggled to recall basic details such as her name and age.
Her fiancé, Conner Welborn, said she was very upset in the aftermath but noted her position on the bed—lying on her side—helped reduce the risk of more severe injury, as it kept the electrical current away from her heart.
Henderson, who has had previous lightning shocks as a child, remains resilient. She joked with her family via text about her shocking day, saying, “If you want to know how my day went, it was a shocking experience.”
