Steel Magnate and Family Killed in Ohio Plane Crash Moments After Takeoff

Family of Wealthy Steel Executive Killed in Ohio Plane Crash

A private twin-engine aircraft carrying a prominent steel industry family crashed shortly after takeoff in Ohio, resulting in six fatalities. The Weller family, owners of Liberty Steel Industries, was traveling from Youngstown Regional Airport to Montana when the tragedy occurred.

The victims include James “Jim” Weller, 67, his wife Veronica, 68, their son John, 36, and daughter-in-law Maria, 34. Also killed were the pilot, Joseph Maxin, 63, a highly experienced aviator and former assistant prosecutor, and co-pilot Timothy Blake, 55. The crash happened approximately seven minutes after takeoff, in a wooded area two miles west of the airport.

Rescue teams faced difficulties reaching the site due to dense woods, but eventually recovered all six bodies. The wreckage was found in a backyard within a heavily wooded area, and witnesses described a thunder-like explosion and a cloud of smoke following the crash. Some residents reported hearing pops akin to thunder, with one saying it sounded “like a bomb.”

Local authorities and emergency crews, including fire, police, and specialized teams, responded swiftly. Drone surveys were conducted to assess environmental hazards like fuel runoff. Firefighters observed a significant fire in the woods where the plane went down, but no homes were hit, lessening the potential ground impact.

This incident is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), with the FAA providing assistance. A preliminary report is expected soon. The crash marks the deadliest in the area’s history, coming less than a year after a similar incident involving a plane attempting an emergency landing at the same airport, which resulted in three fatalities.

The Weller family, well-regarded in local racing communities, was known for their contributions to the industry and local sports. James Weller’s father co-owned Sharon Speedway for decades, and James himself was celebrated for his racing victories.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, emphasizing the community’s profound shock and loss. Experts described the pilots as among the best, and the incident has deeply saddened residents and local racing fans alike.
