Liverpool Targets Bundesliga Defender with £78M Release Clause Amid Competition
Liverpool Eye Bundesliga Defender with £78m Release Clause Amidst Competition
Liverpool are reportedly keen on signing RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, as they look to bolster their defense following the sale of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen for £35 million. The 22-year-old French international has built a solid reputation at Lyon and Leipzig, even earning a senior France cap.
Lukeba stands at 6ft tall and is known for his versatility, often playing as a left-footed central defender capable of fitting into either a three or four-man backline. His current contract runs until 2029, with an £78 million release clause. However, Leipzig has an informal arrangement allowing him to leave for less than the release amount. Despite this, his high market value and contract length mean he will not come cheaply.
Interest in Lukeba extends beyond Liverpool; Bayern Munich and Tottenham are also monitoring the defender, according to French outlet Foot Mercato. Previously linked with Manchester United, Chelsea, and Real Madrid, Lukeba’s future remains uncertain.
He showcased his talent for France’s under-21s at this summer’s Euros and has been compared to Josko Gvardiol, a fellow physical defender who recently transferred to Manchester City from Leipzig. The Frenchman is primarily left-footed and can seamlessly integrate into various defensive formations.
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s transfer activity has been active this summer, acquiring players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez for over £169 million. However, attention is now turning to Ibrahima Konate, whose contract expires next year. Negotiations have stalled, and with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain reportedly interested, his future remains uncertain.
The club is also evaluating other options, such as Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who Liverpool reportedly value at around £50 million, although Palace is believed to want more. Guehi, whose contract is set to expire next year, has garnered interest from several top clubs, and Liverpool’s pursuit will depend on the transfer fee they can negotiate.
