John Legend Responds to Kanye West’s Mash Potatoes Diss and Reflects on Their Past
John Legend addressed a recent and peculiar remark made by Kanye West during an interview, where West claimed Legend smelled like mashed potatoes. Legend, 46, recounted his experience on Hot 97’s “Ebro in the Morning,” joking about West’s obsession with his sweaters and the mashed potato comment, wondering humorously, “What kind of potatoes? Cheesy, garlic?”
Legend emphasized that such comments don’t affect him personally, maintaining confidence with a smile, “Obviously, I smell great.”
In a contentious March interview, West – dressed in a Ku Klux Klan outfit – ranted about Legend, saying, “He got on that hot sweater. They said he smells like mashed potatoes.” West also insulted Legend’s character and accused him of never engaging in political or social issues during their friendship, which Legend found disheartening.
When asked if West’s comments made him sad or offended, Legend admitted, “All of it makes me sad. All of it,” though he confidently added, “not for me, though. I smell great.”
Legend described West as no longer the person he once knew, revealing, “He was full of energy, creativity, and optimism.” He fondly recalled their earlier days, saying, “What a time, what a time,” and shared that they believed they were pioneering a new movement in music—a period he found inspiring, thrilling, and ultimately meaningful.
Legend expressed that it is sad to see how West’s views have diverged from their shared past, but he remains grateful for the time they spent creating music together, stating, “I have no regrets because I’m glad we did what we did.”
