Chili the Chihuahua: 10 Days Missing, Rescued Wet from Hudson River by Kayaker

Rescued after 10 Days in the Water: The Miraculous Return of Chili the Dog

A small Chihuahua mix named Chili endured an incredible ordeal after escaping from his owners in Manhattan and spending nearly a week lost in the city’s waters.

Disappearing during a walk in the West Village, Chili was hit by a car and then ran into traffic, prompting his owner, Gabby Porter, to chase after him. Despite their efforts, Chili managed to escape and was last seen running south along the highway.

Over the next several days, Porter and her partner, Gianni Calistro, spent over 40 hours each searching for Chili. They posted flyers, canvassed the neighborhood, and shared his picture on social media, hoping for a lead.

Remarkably, a kayaker named Joseph Scarpetta spotted the distressed pup in the Hudson River and quickly recognized him from the flyers. Chili was found more than 200 feet offshore amid floating trash, covered in motor oil, dehydrated, and extremely malnourished.

Chili, found nearly a week after he vanished, was rescued from the river and reunited with his owners.

Four kayakers, including Scarpetta, worked together to rescue Chili from the water. He was then taken to a veterinary center, where his health was confirmed to be good, aside from dehydration and severe oil saturation. It’s believed Chili had hidden under a pier during his time in the water.

After being rescued, Chili was unsteady but friendly, quickly regaining his lively spirit. His owners said he no longer pulls on the leash and has become a beloved part of their family, despite losing some weight.

This extraordinary rescue has drawn comparisons to the “Miracle on the Hudson,” emphasizing Chili’s resilience and the remarkable efforts of those who saved him.

His owners have since fitted him with a new, more secure harness, ensuring he stays safe during future adventures, and Chili remains happy and loved, a true testament to his fighting spirit.
