Chelsea’s Future Star Estevao Willian: Brazil’s Talent Ready to Shine in the Premier League & Club World Cup
Estevao Willian: From Palmeiras Prodigy to Future Chelsea Star
Warning against nicknames, Estevao Willian prefers not to be called ‘Messinho’ or ‘Little Messi,’ despite his impressive skills that draw such comparisons. The 18-year-old Palmeiras winger is set to face his future club, Chelsea, in the upcoming Club World Cup quarter-final before officially transferring to the Premier League giants.
Initially compared to Lionel Messi due to his quick decision-making and left-footed skill, Estevao’s style also bears resemblance to Neymar and Lamine Yamal, thanks to his dribbling and goal-threatening abilities. Yet, he remains unconcerned with such labels, focusing instead on his development.
Born in Franca, São Paulo, Estevao joined Cruzeiro at age 10, traveling 280 miles from his hometown to Belo Horizonte, showcasing early talent that saw him in the club’s Under 17 team by age 13. Despite facing older and more physically developed players, he established himself as a standout, supported by intensive physical training and expert coaching.
His rise was interrupted by controversy in 2021 when an investigation linked Cruzeiro’s vice-president to illegal dealings involving youth players. Estevao’s family broke ties with Cruzeiro amid legal disputes, but he continued to excel, scoring three goals in five appearances for Brazil’s Under 17s and later becoming the youngest winner of Brazil’s Player of the Year at just 17.
Remarkably, Estevao debuted for Palmeiras’s senior team in late 2023, contributing to a crucial league match that clinched the title. His talent earned him a £29 million move to Chelsea, joining a squad of talented South Americans, including Andrey Santos and Moises Caicedo.
He has already represented Brazil internationally, earning five caps and making his first start last month. With ambitions to play in Europe, Estevao admits he experiences nerves ahead of major competitions but remains eager and focused on his goal.
His ultimate dream is to succeed in Europe, balancing the challenges with the support of his family and his relentless drive to excel on the world stage.
