Black Bear Euthanized After Attacking Camper Near Lake Tahoe

A black bear with a history of confrontations with humans and break-ins was euthanized after it attacked a camper at a campground close to Emerald Bay State Park. The incident occurred early Sunday morning when the female bear entered a trailer, waking the camper around 4:30 a.m.

Despite attempts to scare it off by shouting and banging pots, the bear forced its way inside and swiped at the camper, causing cuts and bruises on her arms and hands. She required transportation to a hospital for treatment. Later that morning, the same bear tore open the door of a camper van with teenagers inside and was seen harassing other visitors at the site.

Wildlife officials tracked the bear to a nearby campground on Monday and, after DNA confirmation connecting it to the earlier attack, euthanized it to prevent further danger to the public. The bear had been under observation since June 17 after multiple reports of break-ins and confrontations, including a prior incident where it broke into a car with a child inside.

Rapid response by wildlife officers led to the euthanasia of the bear near Emerald Bay.

Attempts to trap the bear had been ongoing since mid-June, as officials tried hazing methods to deter it from inhabited areas. The decision to euthanize was made amid concerns for public safety, following numerous calls and previous break-ins, including one where the bear entered a car with a child in a child seat.

Officials confirmed that the bear’s two cubs were captured and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility, with hopes for eventual release back into the wild. Residents and visitors are reminded to remain vigilant, secure food, and respect wildlife in the Tahoe region.
