University of Virginia President Resigns Amid Federal Investigation

James Ryan has stepped down from his role as President of the University of Virginia amid ongoing scrutiny from the Department of Justice (DOJ). The investigation centers around the university’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, which some federal officials have accused of violating presidential directives.

Ryan announced his resignation in a letter to the university community, citing the difficulty of maintaining his principles while facing pressure from the federal government. He expressed his commitment to the institution but stated that fighting the federal government to protect his position would be unethical and potentially harmful to the university’s future.

The DOJ has accused Ryan of non-compliance with an executive order from former President Trump, which directed public universities to dismantle DEI programs deemed discriminatory. According to a letter from the DOJ’s civil rights division in June, officials indicated that Ryan’s resignation was necessary to halt the investigation. Prior warnings were issued to UVA, highlighting concerns about the university’s adherence to the order.

Some university board members reportedly met with DOJ officials to explore alternatives, with suggestions that Ryan should step aside. Ryan, however, viewed such a move as impractical, fearing it could jeopardize federal funding and visa approvals for international students. He noted his original plan was to step down in 2026 but decided to resign earlier to avoid causing harm to his colleagues and students.

In a separate communication with the board, Ryan indicated his resignation would take effect by August 15 at the latest. His departure marks a significant moment amid a broader federal campaign targeting universities over their handling of campus antisemitism and DEI policies, affecting institutions like Columbia and Harvard as well.
