NJ Lawmaker Proposes Shocking New Name for Historic Delaware Bay—You Won’t Believe Why!

Proposal to Rename Delaware Bay as “The Bay of New Jersey”

A New Jersey legislator has introduced a bill suggesting the renaming of Delaware Bay to “The Bay of New Jersey.” Inspired by a recent move by President Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” the bill aims to have state agencies adopt the new name across various platforms, including publications, signage, and websites, and notify federal authorities.

State Senator Michael Testa, a Republican and supporter of President Trump, emphasized the importance of local identity, citing New Jersey’s strong fishing industry. He stated, “The bay we fish in has long been claimed by others, and it’s time we recognize it as ours.”

The body of water, vital for tourism, commerce, and recreation in New Jersey, has borne the name of its southern neighbor since 1610, when it was named after Thomas West, the third Baron de la Warr.

Testa expressed pride for New Jersey’s maritime industry, saying, “It’s about time we call it by our own name.” He also suggested that the state reclaim a piece of land on Salem County’s shoreline, which has been historically considered part of Delaware due to an old border agreement.

Following Trump’s naming proposal, some politicians in other states have joked about renaming local landmarks. Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont posted a humorous suggestion to rename Long Island Sound as the “Connecticut Sound,” prompting a light-hearted exchange among officials.
