Environmentalists Sue to Stop Florida’s ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ Deportation Center! Shocking Fight to Save Wildlife

Florida Builds Controversial Immigration Detention Center in the Everglades

In the remote wetlands of the Everglades, the Florida government is rapidly constructing a new ICE detention facility, dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz,” on an airfield that once served military and law enforcement training. The facility, expected to house up to 1,000 detainees, could be operational as soon as next week.

During a recent interview, Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted the facility’s role in deportation operations, stating that deportation flights may also originate from this site. He emphasized the project as a “force multiplier,” aligning with federal immigration enforcement goals and noting that the construction includes minimal infrastructure, mainly tents and trailers, at an estimated annual cost of $450 million to Florida, possibly reimbursed by the federal government.

Critics have raised significant concerns. Environmental groups filed a lawsuit arguing that the project proceeded without proper environmental review, especially considering its location within the ecologically sensitive Big Cypress National Preserve, home to endangered species like the Florida panther and the wood stork. The Miccosukee Tribe also opposes the project, citing potential harm to their ancestral lands.

Opponents further criticized safety claims made by state officials, including a statement suggesting that local wildlife like alligators and pythons would serve as natural deterrents to escapes.

The surge in immigration detention nationwide, with ICE holding over 56,000 individuals—a record high—has prompted state responses like Florida’s. The recent push for large-scale detention centers is part of a broader strategy under Governor DeSantis, who has enacted numerous anti-immigrant laws and fostered police collaboration with ICE.
