Country Star Living with HIV Drops Heartwarming Anthem for LGBTQ+ Teens Struggling to Love Themselves!
Country Singer David Michael Hawkins Releases Vulnerable New Single “Sin”
Nashville-based country artist David Michael Hawkins has unveiled his new single, “Sin,” a deeply personal and honest song released during Pride Month and ahead of HIV Testing Day on June 27. Hawkins, who is openly living with HIV, crafted the song to inspire and support marginalized communities, especially LGBTQIA youth, individuals battling addiction, and those diagnosed with HIV who may feel unloved or isolated.
In discussing the song, Hawkins emphasized its purpose: “It’s designed for queer people who see themselves in the lyrics. It’s for those raised on country music but who finally find relatable stories.” He shared that “Sin” was inspired by his own journey—moving past childhood abuse, substance abuse, mental health struggles, and an HIV diagnosis. He hopes the song sheds light on these issues, stressing that many in the queer community experience similar hardships and loneliness, which can have damaging effects.
“I wanted to write about those lows, but also convey hope,” Hawkins explained. “Even in the darkest moments, there’s a small ember of hope that can grow into a blaze.” The lyrics reflect personal memories, including the day he told his mother he planned to get tested for HIV and the emotional aftermath of receiving his diagnosis. Hawkins wants listeners to know they are not alone and that hope and acceptance can be found even in adversity.
As the first openly HIV-positive country artist, Hawkins embraces his truth through his music. He states, “Country music is about honesty, and I’ve always been open about my life. “Sin” is a proud addition to my story.” Though he recognizes that Nashville may still be slow to fully embrace LGBTQ+ artists, he believes progress is happening, with more queer artists thriving today.
He concludes by emphasizing the importance of hope: “Even when it feels like there’s no way out, a small spark can ignite change. If I can turn my life around, others can too.” Hawkins hopes listeners find solace and understanding in his song, knowing they’re not alone, and that there’s always a path toward healing and acceptance.
