A Connecticut lawmaker was recently caught shoplifting at a Target store after failing to scan two items worth $26.69. The incident occurred in Bethel, about 60 miles from Hartford, where loss prevention staff reviewed security footage showing him neglect to scan selected items.
The representative, Raghib Allie-Brennan, 33, a four-term legislator first elected in 2018, was detained by store security who recognized him from previous unreported thefts, according to police reports.
Allie-Brennan later addressed the incident through a social media post, explaining that he was in a rush to deliver items to his hospitalized grandmother and was juggling multiple purchases. He acknowledged the oversight, took responsibility, and emphasized his commitment to legal and ethical standards.
“During a recent visit to the Bethel Target, I failed to scan two items amid a busy shopping trip. I was rushing to get items to my grandmother in the hospital and was handling multiple purchases without bags,” he stated. “I accept full responsibility and am working through the legal process to resolve this matter quickly and respectfully.”
He concluded by reaffirming his respect for the law and his dedication to serving his community with transparency and integrity.
In response, Connecticut House Speaker Matt Ritter commented on the situation, underscoring the importance of accountability among elected officials.
