NBA Draft 2025: Mavericks Officially Name Jason Kidd as Next Head Coach Amid Knicks Rumors!

Jason Kidd Remains Head Coach of the Dallas Mavericks

Despite some speculation during the offseason, particularly with the New York Knicks coaching vacancy still open, Jason Kidd will continue as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison confirmed this after drafting Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

Kidd recently finished his fourth season coaching the Mavericks. Although there were brief links to the Knicks job following the firing of Tom Thibodeau, the franchise declined New York’s request to interview Kidd. The Mavericks had always anticipated Kidd’s ongoing role and are reportedly working to extend his contract, though details have not been disclosed.

During his tenure, Kidd has compiled a record of 179 wins and 149 losses. He led the team to the NBA Finals in 2024 when Luka Dončić was still part of the roster.

With Kidd confirmed to remain, attention now shifts to welcoming the latest rookie, Cooper Flagg. The former Duke player, named the National Player of the Year, averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds last season and helped lead Duke to the Final Four. Flagg is scheduled to have his introductory press conference alongside Kidd and team management this Friday.

Reflecting on his approach, Flagg said, “I’m going to try my best. I know expectations will be high, but I want to impact the game in any way I can. I’ll do whatever role I’m given and give it my all.”
