Cuomo Considers Running as an Independent After Primary Loss

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has not yet decided whether to run in the upcoming mayoral race as an independent candidate, following a surprising defeat in the Democratic primary by 33-year-old socialist Zohran Mamdani.

The primary result, which saw Mamdani emerge victorious, sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party establishment. Cuomo, who previously positioned himself as a strong contender, is now evaluating the electoral landscape before making a final decision. He stated that he’s reviewing the primary results and intends to observe the general election’s dynamics and key issues before committing.

Despite his primary loss, Cuomo’s team announced last month that he would run on the “Fight and Deliver” independent ballot line in November, aiming to appeal to disillusioned Democrats, independents, and Republicans. The primary results showed Cuomo trailing Mamdani by nearly 7 points, with Cuomo’s support coming from a small percentage of registered voters.

Cuomo believes the upcoming campaign will highlight different issues than those prominent in the primary field. He emphasized the importance of practical solutions over campaign promises, subtly criticizing Mamdani’s platform of free programs.

Cuomo has qualified to run as an independent, which would add him to a crowded field that includes Mamdani and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who opted to skip the primary to run for re-election as an independent, would be a significant rival. Adams has criticized Cuomo’s independent bid, accusing him of seeking attention without a genuine desire for the office.

Amid these developments, Adams dismissed Cuomo’s attempt, comparing Mamdani’s campaign promises to “snake oil,” asserting that Cuomo’s political presence is outdated and that he lacked the genuine motivation for public service.

As the primary count nears completion, Mamdani commands a substantial lead with over 96% of votes tallied, securing approximately 43.5% of the vote compared to Cuomo’s 36.4%. The final ranked-choice voting results are expected by early July. Despite spending millions and garnering union support, Cuomo’s campaign was outperformed by Mamdani in the critical lead-up to the election.

More than 993,500 residents participated in the primary, reflecting a competitive and spirited contest for the city’s mayoralty.
