Shocking Rescue! 50+ People & 6 Dogs Saved from Ohio River Just Days After Father-Son Tubing Disappearance

Over 50 Rescued from Ohio River During Sudden Currents

In a dramatic rescue operation, the Kent Fire Department pulled more than 50 individuals, including children and six dogs, from the Cuyahoga River following unexpected and dangerous currents Sunday afternoon.

The intense rescue effort followed a tragic incident the previous day when a father and his 5-year-old son drowned after being knocked into the water while tubing. The boy’s body was recovered Sunday morning, but the father remains missing, likely waiting for water levels to subside before recovery efforts can continue.

The department responded initially to reports of 11 people who had fallen out of their rafts and kayaks, many without lifejackets, and were struggling in the swift water. As the currents worsened, the number of those needing help surged, with rescuers saving over 50 people as more groups were swept away amidst the chaos.

The department reported that many individuals were coming downstream in kayaks and rafts when control was lost or when they were thrown out by the forceful current. The rescue operation took over three hours and involved assistance from neighboring fire departments and specialized water rescue teams.

Authorities had previously issued a warning about the elevated water levels and hazardous rapids following severe weather last week that caused widespread power outages and property damage. However, not everyone stayed ashore, and the river’s unpredictability proved deadly for some.

Officials urge caution and advise staying off the water until conditions improve, emphasizing safety over adventure during such rough conditions.
