Brad Lander, the city’s comptroller, is likely aware that his fellow Democratic Socialist, Zohran Mamdani, cannot fulfill his expensive campaign promises without risking significant harm to the city’s finances. If Mamdani attempts to deliver on his pledges, it could lead to severe economic consequences for New York.

During the primary race, Lander remained silent about Mamdani’s plans for free services, ignoring the substantial costs involved and the unlikelihood of funding them through higher taxes. Mamdani’s proposals, such as free public transportation and tuition-free CUNY, would run into billions of dollars—money that the city simply cannot afford. For instance, making CUNY’s tuition-free could cost around $1 billion and potentially lead to the cutting of degree programs and faculty jobs.

Despite recognizing the fiscal impracticality, Lander chose not to challenge Mamdani’s rhetoric or call out the socialist candidate’s controversial statements, including antisemitic remarks, even though Lander himself is a proud Jew.

Throughout the campaign, Lander maintained a contradictory stance: supporting Mamdani publicly while opposing him in the primary. Now, with Lander set to leave office soon, it’s uncertain whether he will finally reveal the truth about Mamdani’s unrealistic promises. Many believe he will remain silent, perhaps preparing for a future role within Mamdani’s administration.

If there’s any silver lining, it’s that Lander’s departure at the end of his term means New Yorkers may soon be free from his political influence and misleading narratives.
