Sheriff’s Wife Arrested on Racketeering Charges

The wife of a Florida sheriff accused of supporting a large-scale illegal gambling operation has been taken into custody on similar criminal charges. Robin Severance-Lopez, estranged from Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez, was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) on state charges of conspiracy to commit racketeering.

This arrest follows weeks after her husband was detained and charged with felony racketeering related to an extensive gambling ring near the Walt Disney World area. Court documents reveal that Lopez allegedly protected the operation in exchange for personal payments and campaign contributions. Authorities did not specify the extent of her involvement.

The criminal enterprise ran a lottery, slot machines, and operated a gambling house out of the Fusion Social Club in Kissimmee, Florida, generating over $21.6 million in illicit earnings. The operation involved five defendants in total.

Following his arrest, Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Lopez and appointed a Florida Highway Patrol official to serve as interim sheriff. Florida law enforcement officials expressed disappointment, emphasizing the breach of public trust and integrity expected from elected officials.

Authorities state that Lopez actively concealed the illegal activities and benefited financially from them. The investigation revealed that he was involved in protecting and sustaining the illegal gambling through his official position.

Details about Severance-Lopez’s specific role are not clear. An inquiry to the sheriff’s office went unanswered. County Manager Don Fisher noted that the county had no involvement in the investigation and expressed readiness to support the interim sheriff.

Previously, Lopez faced legal issues in December when he pleaded no contest to violating state records laws for posting an image of a deceased girl online and paid a fine. The girl’s death was linked to her boyfriend, who has been charged in relation to her murder.
