During an early collaboration, Tom Cruise playfully called out Michael Cera on set. The incident happened while filming a short scene for the 2010 MTV Movie Awards when Cera was overheard talking during a take. He recalled on the “Louis Theroux Podcast” that he and a colleague were quietly mumbling while filming, but their voices could be heard approximately 40 feet away.

According to Cera, Cruise was quick to interrupt, asking, “Is that Michael Cera talking during a f–king take?’” Although Cera believed Cruise was joking, it was apparent the actor wanted him to be silent. Cruise later joked about the incident, assuring he was only kidding when he brought it up again.

In an interview, Cera described working with Cruise as “surreal” and “fascinating,” though he initially forgot they had shared a brief encounter. He clarified, “I haven’t worked with Tom Cruise,” then quickly corrected himself, “Oh, yes. I have. Crazy thing to forget.”

He also noted that Cruise was “very friendly,” with leadership qualities that made him feel like the set’s de facto first assistant director. Cera observed Cruise’s commanding presence, despite the short interaction.

The actor also touched on Cruise’s personality, describing him as “very friendly” yet “running the set” with clear authority. Cera’s brief experience with Cruise left a “surreal” impression, though he admitted he initially spaced on the details of their interaction.
