Shocking! Close Associate of Smithtown Supervisor Stalked and Menaced GOP Challenger Days Before Primary!
Boyfriend of Incumbent’s Daughter Arrested Ahead of Long Island Election
Less than a day before voting begins in a modest Republican primary on Long Island, a scandal has emerged involving the boyfriend of the incumbent supervisor’s daughter, who was detained for allegedly harassing a political opponent through bizarre late-night visits, police report.
Joshua Smith, 47, identified on social media as Kellie Ann Wehrheim’s partner, was taken into custody Monday night on charges of stalking Suffolk Legislator Rob Trotta, a candidate challenging Wehrheim in the upcoming election.
Starting June 16, Smith reportedly made repeated late-night appearances at Trotta’s residence — revving his car engine loudly and flashing high beams — on three consecutive nights, according to police and Trotta. On some visits, Smith is accused of vandalizing campaign signs, cutting some and spray-painting others.
“One night I was in bed when I suddenly heard loud revving, almost like thunder,” Trotta recounted. “When I looked out, I could barely see him before he drove away.” He added that Smith’s vehicle was identified as an ’89 Chevrolet pick-up truck, and authorities confirmed it was his.
Trotta noted that the harassment began shortly after a recent shooting incident involving two Minnesota state legislators, raising fears that political violence could occur locally. Concerned for his family’s safety, Trotta contacted police, who installed a license plate reader at his home. The following night, Smith allegedly returned, and police tracked him down after reading his license plate.
Smith’s arrest was made the following Monday, after law enforcement conducted a full investigation. His detention comes just before the primary election that will determine the Republican candidate for Smithtown Supervisor — a seat Wehrheim has held for over seven years, with Trotta challenging him.
Prior to his arrest, Wehrheim’s campaign dismissed allegations of any misconduct by Smith, emphasizing their focus on his positive record rather than distractions or harassment. A campaign spokesperson stated, “Our focus remains on delivering results over the past years as Supervisor.”
