Sam Kerr’s S:ho:ck Secret Injury Nearly Ends Career—Fansastrophe Unfolds!

Sam Kerr Makes Surprise Return to Matildas Training

Star striker Sam Kerr has unexpectedly rejoined her national team for training ahead of their upcoming matches under new coach Joe Montemurro. She shared her return with fans through an Instagram post, showcasing a photo of the Sam Kerr Football Centre in Perth, where the team is training, and a shot of her feet on the field, accompanied by sweating emojis.

Although Kerr was not included in the 33-player squad for upcoming friendly matches against Slovenia and Panama, she was seen training with the team in Perth for the first time since April. Her last involvement was some light training ahead of April’s friendly games against South Korea, with no game time.

The 31-year-old recovered from a serious knee injury sustained during a Chelsea training camp in January last year, which involved a ruptured ACL. Her recovery has taken longer than anticipated, prompting speculation about her progress. Earlier this year, her club manager confirmed she would not return before the end of the Women’s Super League season.

Recent reports indicated Kerr had to undergo a second surgical intervention on a new, undisclosed injury that had been kept secret. She made a surprise appearance at the A-League Women’s grand final in May, shortly after welcoming her son Jagger with fiancee Kristie Mewis. Coach Montemurro stated she is now back on grass and training, showing significant improvement in her knee.

He also clarified that Kerr’s future as Australia’s captain will be addressed once she resumes competitive play. Although there were some complications, he confirmed her knee is now better and that she’s been involved in training since her surgery. Following her trip to Western Australia, Kerr expressed optimism about her recovery.

The upcoming match against Slovenia marks Montemurro’s debut as head coach. The four friendly games are crucial for the team’s preparation toward major tournaments such as the 2026 Asian Cup, the 2027 World Cup, and the 2028 Olympics. Players like Clare Wheeler are already embracing Montemurro’s style, which emphasizes possession and control, energizing the team ahead of the fixtures.
