Bill Clinton Endorses Andrew Cuomo for NYC Mayor

Former President Bill Clinton has publicly backed his former Housing Secretary, Andrew Cuomo, in the upcoming New York City mayoral primary. Clinton described the city as being in a state of crisis and praised Cuomo as a capable leader, urging voters to support him in the race.

In a recorded robocall, Clinton emphasized Cuomo’s experience and ability to handle the city’s pressing issues. He mentioned Cuomo’s work in his presidential administration on affordable housing and combatting hate crimes, including efforts against discrimination and hate groups like the Ku Klux Klan.

“He’s a fighter who knows how to make government work, and at a time when our basic rights are under threat, I trust he will stand up for the people of this city,” Clinton stated. He believes Cuomo can elevate the city’s standards and address its challenges.

Cuomo Responds and Campaigns Ahead

Cuomo expressed his gratitude for Clinton’s endorsement, calling it an honor and highlighting Clinton’s distinguished presidency. Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations that he has denied, is seeking to revive his political career through this mayoral bid.

Clinton pointed out the city’s major issues such as the housing shortage, homelessness crisis, and the need to restore public safety. “New York needs a leader with the talent and experience to manage these challenges,” he said.

In the race, Cuomo leads socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani in ranked-choice voting with a current advantage of 55% to 45%, though this is a decrease from earlier polls where he held a 60% lead in May. Notably, Clinton’s endorsement arrives just days before the primary election.
