Pep Guardiola Confirms Man City Will Trim Squad Before Premier League Season Amid Key Player Interest!
Pep Guardiola Confirms Manchester City Will Reduce Squad Size Before the New Season
Manager Pep Guardiola has announced that Manchester City plans to trim their squad ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign. The team traveled with 24 outfield players and three goalkeepers to compete in the Club World Cup, aiming to secure qualification in their next match against Al Ain.
Guardiola emphasized the importance of managing squad numbers, especially since some players are likely to leave. Notably, Ilkay Gündogan is being targeted by Galatasaray, and Mateo Kovacic, who is currently injured, also has potential suitors. Additionally, players like Jack Grealish, Kalvin Phillips, and Kyle Walker are not part of the traveling group and are expected to be transferred soon.
The coach previously highlighted the need for a larger squad due to injuries sustained in recent seasons. However, following eight new signings since January, Guardiola recognizes the challenge of keeping all players satisfied with a group that has often consisted of around 20 outfielders during his tenure at City.
Commenting on player fitness, Guardiola confirmed that Rodri is not yet ready to start a match despite having played in a recent game against Wydad AC. He also hinted at the club’s interest in South American teams, leaving open the possibility of managing on that continent in the future.
Looking ahead to the Champions League clash against Al Ain, Guardiola expressed respect for the opponent, noting the connection to City’s owners, and is optimistic about progressing further in the tournament:
“It’s a privilege to be here. In four years, we might not qualify again, so we aim to win big prizes. We’ll take the match against Al Ain seriously and see what happens.”
