John Stones Overcomes Injury Setbacks and Prepares for Future Success

Despite not yet securing a starting position regularly, John Stones reports feeling rejuvenated after a difficult period marked by injuries that puzzled top specialists.

Last season, he missed 33 matches for Manchester City due to four separate injuries, including issues with his foot and thigh, and has not played since February. In his two Premier League campaigns, he has only started 18 times but is determined to make the most of his remaining contract year.

Recent consultations with medical and sports science teams have prompted Stones to change his habits off the field to extend his career. “I’ve faced some very tough moments,” Stones admitted. “Repetitive injuries made me doubt everything. I questioned whether it was all worth it.”

He reflected on the mental challenges, sharing, “There were dark days when I wondered why it kept happening, despite all the effort I put in.” Despite the frustrations, he feels optimistic now: “I feel great now, ready to return.”

“We’ve examined everything closely, but certain injuries are simply unexplainable,” he explained. “That’s mentally tough, not having clear answers. Still, I plan to focus on training details—especially the loads I handle during practice—to stay fit.”

Since returning to training, Stones feels reborn and is eager to start playing again. He’s also focusing on “extra details” in his training to remain healthy and available for matches, especially with an eye on making England’s World Cup squad.

“I’ve been monitoring my training loads carefully,” he said. “Adding small tweaks has already made a significant difference. I’m excited to see how these improvements help me stay on the pitch.”
