Seph Mozes, the son of actress Cynthia Nixon who now identifies as a man, recently announced he is undertaking a hunger strike to show support for Gaza. Nixon shared that her 28-year-old child, along with five others in Chicago, is participating in this protest, though she emphasized he has no illusions about ending the conflict but hopes to contribute in any way.

In a display of self-promotion, Nixon’s gesture appears more symbolic than impactful, reminiscent of the famous 1980s PSA: “I learned it by watching you, Mom.”

Following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Nixon declared she would join lawmakers in a five-day fast supporting a ceasefire in Gaza. However, she committed only to two days—abstaining from her favorite cinnamon raisin bagels with lox—underscoring her sense of sacrifice and solidarity.

Meanwhile, some New York City politicians have been engaging in performative activism. Last Saturday, the anti-Trump protest, viewed as a social gathering for older activists, resembled a tantrum against a legitimately elected president rather than effective action. Soon after, City Comptroller and mayoral hopeful Brad Lander staged a publicity stunt by getting arrested outside a federal immigration court, an action that ultimately backfired humiliatingly.

Lander was detained after grabbing at an ICE officer during a confrontation outside an immigration court.

On releasing Lander without charges, Governor Kathy Hochul posted a photo of them walking together, signaling political theater. Lander received support from fellow Democrats, even as city residents face real issues like crime and safety concerns.

Overall, these actions highlight the disconnect between political posturing and tangible improvements for residents. Critics argue that such theatrics only serve the ambitions of politicians rather than addressing the city’s real needs. It’s time for experienced leaders to step in and restore order and stability to the city.
